by Godden:
Hellmuth Carl Bernard Moltke, the son of a Danish general, was born in October 1800. In 1822 he transferred to the Prussian army and became Chief of the General Staff. He was the architect of Prussia's military supremacy and may be regarded as the greatest strategist of his period. Baron von Moltke died on 24 April 1891.

The simple title MOLTKE was first listed on label 23+34b of 1888. The silk would, however, appear to have been mainly made for the Continental market. Specimens are rare. It is included on the Franz Drahne German back-label. An unmounted example is shown on plate 163, reproduced from the Stevens presentation volume.

Other comments:
No Stevens credit is evident on either card mount

The German card mount shown above has the same printed design as many of the other continental silks recorded on this site.

Godden has an image of the Franz Drahne back label, and on that, the title is given as " GRAF MOLTKE ", that is Count Moltke.
