by Geoffrey Godden:
Albert Edward was born at Buckingham Palace on 9 November 1841, the first son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. He was created Prince of Wales as an infant, on 4 December 1841.
He married Princess Alexandra of Denmark on 10 March 1863, Prince George (later King George V) being born on 3 June 1865.
Prince Edward had several illnesses, one of which necessitated the postponement of his coronation (Queen Victoria having died in January 1901), until August 1902.
His reign was conspicuous for his devotion to inter-national understanding and he earned the name 'Edward the Peacemaker'. King Edward died on 6 May 1910.

The monarch had earlier appeared on Thomas Stevens Stevengraphs as 'The Prince of Wales', the title KING EDWARD VII having been first included on label 31+39a - which, of course, dates from Queen Victoria's death and the accession of Edward to the throne.

The silk is reproduced above and makes a pair with that depicting Queen Alexandra (so20). The King was also depicted in postcard form, as with other portrait versions.
