by Godden:
A very rare version of THE STRUGGLE has the following printed on the front of the card-mount: 'West St. Mary's Ward Election. Plump for Read, the Popular Candidate' and, below the picture and title, 'Three Cheers for the Red, White and Blue. Wellington House, Southgate Street, Leicester'.
The election gift was issued by Robert Read, Junior, who unsuccessfully stood as an independent candidate for West St Mary's Ward, Leicester, the election taking place on 1 November 1879.
The specially overprinted examples must have been issues for a brief period and only in Leicester. It is not at present known if other subjects were also issued with this or similar election wording.
