Comments:
Image very kindly donated by Carole Clarke (see bibliography) who's grandfather and an uncle both worked for Brough, Nicholson & Hall before the war.

When the Stevens company closed in Coventry, the business was taken over by Brough, Nicholson & Hall. In the early days of the combined Stevens and Brough, Nicholson & Hall, the company maintained two separate customer lists, and were apparently so successful that no customers were aware of the joint activity.
One of the unusual consequences of this policy was that this silk, above, was issued by both Brough, Nicholson & Hall (to whom it is correctly attributed), and also to the Stevens customers with the words "Woven in all pure silk by Thomas Stevens (Coventry) Ltd. Coventry, England" woven into the top turn over of the bookmark.

Rear of bookmark with credit to Thomas Stevens (Coventry).
