William Booth was born in Nottingham in 1829 and died in 1912. He was a British itinerant Methodist preacher, and established a mission in Whitechapel, London, in 1865. There was reluctance on the part of the established churches to accept his religious converts from the slum dwellings, and this led to the foundation of the Salvation Army in 1877.
