Signed: "J. MATTHEWS     LONDON 1862" on reverse at top turnover

Woven signature on top reverse of this bookmark

There is an indistinct diamond registration mark on the reverse, pointed end of this bookmark. Godden does not record this design as having been registered by Matthews, although he does record a registration by John Caldicott on 11 October 1862, with the same title. It is hence probable this bookmark was actually woven by Caldicott, not by Matthews at all, and that Matthews was possibly just an outlet.
