Comments:
by Geoffrey Godden:
This rare Grant portrait silk is included on printed back-labels of the 1887-8 period.

Other comments:
Beecher was an American Congregationalist clergyman, born 24th June 1813 and died 8th March 1887. He was a social reformer and speaker, known for his support for the abolition of slavery and his emphasis on God's love.

It is interesting that at the top of the card matt it says " OLD LONDON SOUVENIR ", and yet below the portrait, Grant has printed their USA address. It is hence probable that this silk portrait was produced for a USA Exposition, although we have no other exposition silks recorded from the 1887-8 back-label period quoted by Godden.
