25 November 2020 Ship: RMS Tunisian As a direct response to a question raised by Graham Parker, there are two corrections now on this site:

I had previously recorded the ship S.S. Tunisian as being a Stevens postcard. On very close inspection, I realised the image was actually of a Grant postcard, and the Stevens title has now been removed.

With Graham's guidance it is now identified that whilst the card mounts of the respective Grant postcard S.S. Tunisian, and the Stevens postcard R.M.S. Tunisian are genuine, the actual woven silk is identical between the two. It would hence seem that one or other of these cards has the wrong silk, although it is unknown which.

Grant Postcards The following is a new title added for the first time to the catalogue. The title itself is already recorded, but as a large Franco-British card, whilst this new addition is a postcard:

owe566 - Remember / Me / Remember Me / Thou leav'st behind . . (flowers) (excellent quality image)

Other weavers Some time ago, a new weaver, G.J.C. Ltd, was added to this site. During the process of adding individual titles however, there was a concern that some bookmarks clearly had "G.J.C." woven on the reverse, whilst others appeared to have "G.J.G." instead.
With the current donation by Graham Parker of the following new addition to the catalogue, it is clear there are in fact two weavers, each with very similar initials. These two have now been split as G.J.C. Ltd, and as G.J.G. Ltd.
The following is the new title added for the first time to the catalogue, supported by an excellent quality image donated by Graham Parker:
ogjg40 - Ebenezer hitherto hath the Lord helped us (excellent quality image)

There are a few bookmarks that were woven by Welch & Lenton, but seen attached to stiff backing papers with the printed name of THOMAS W BAND. To aid identification of these, a new sub-section of Welch & Lenton has been created to specifically record these THOMAS W BAND bookmarks.

  J. & J. Cash An additional 14 images have been added to bookmark titles already recorded, together with 2 new titles and images, added for the first time to the catalogue:
These new designs include one USA bookmark and one UK:
cash-bm0181 - {no words - Robin on branch} (Card with attached mini-bookmark:) (excellent quality image)
cash-bm0766 - Christmas Bells send our Greetings (excellent quality image)
The CASH'S statistics are now,

Other Woven Items: 83 titles recorded (previously: 83) with 21 images (previously 21)

4 May 2020 Stevens Bookmarks A different kind of update this time, as it involves removal of titles rather than the usual addition . . . . .
Darby, in compiling his original list, included titles taken directly from Stevens trade adverts. Godden likewise did the same, and as I used both Darby's and Godden's lists as the basis of this site, I too have included titles derived from Stevens adverts.
With hindsight, it is evident a few of Stevens entries were descriptive of the bookmark rather than being the actual title.
In response to this, I have removed a small number of previously recorded titles, and by way of explanation, here are three examples of these:-

Example 1: It is known that STEVENS prosecuted Mulloney & Johnson for infringement of copyright. Throughout the court case, everyone, including Stevens, referred to the disputed bookmark as being " THE CRUCIFIXION ". This same title appeared in Stevens trade adverts of the time, and consequently, recorded by Darby, Godden and on this site. A bookmark with this title though has never been recorded.
During the trial, Stevens gave the actual date the design was registered, and through Godden's record of registrations, it is known this bookmark to be " THE REDEEMER ". What should be noted here is that the central picture is indeed that of the Crucifixion, but not the actual title.

Example 2: STEVENS records the title " LITTLE SAMUEL ". As a title, this refers to a painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723 - 1792), and depicts a little boy kneeling in prayer. No Stevens bookmark with this title has been recorded, although the Reynolds painting is reproduced by Stevens as the central picture of his bookmark " GENTLE JESUS, MEEK AND MILD ".

Example 3: STEVENS records the title " HAVE MERCY UPON US (CHARITY GIRLS) ", although no such bookmark with this title has been recorded. There is however a bookmark matching this description of Charity Girls, being " O LORD HAVE MERCY UPON US ".

The following is a complete list of those bookmark titles removed from this Catalogue:

DARBY
No.

GODDEN
No.

TITLE

Reason

59
320
A blessing / Oh fair and flowry / . . . to be thee
Title very similar to sb128: A blessing / Oh fair and flowry / . . .and those that love thee. The word " LOVE " of bookmark sb128 though, can easily be mis-read as " TO BE ", which renders the title of Darby's bookmark 59.
3
363
Agnus Dei (narrow band)
This title was derived from the Stevens adverts. There are a number of Stevens bookmarks with titles " ECCO AGNUS DEI ", and this entry is quite probably one of these.
not recorded
335
All hail to merry Christmas / The merry bells
It is not known from where Godden derived this title, although to date, it has not been recorded as an image. There is however recorded a bookmark, sb218: A merry Christmas / All hail to merry Xmas (beneath robin and leaves) / The merry bells, and if the top were missing, the remaining silk bookmark would appear with this title.
not recorded
370
Awake, my soul, and with the sun
Godden records this title, but also notes that Stevens advert says " Kenn's Morning Hymn - Awake, etc. ". This actual title is recorded as sb1440: MORNING HYMN / AWAKE MY SOUL, AND WITH THE SUN, which Godden records as number 582.
not recorded
454
Glory to God in the highest
Godden records this title as having been derived from a Stevens advert. It is believed the actual title is sb220: A MERRY CHRISTMAS / GLORY TO GOD IN THE HIGHEST, which Godden records as number 338.
38
467
Happy may thy birthday (woven bee) / And very many
Godden records this title and refers to Plate 264. However, Plate 264 has the title sb928: HAPPY MAY YOUR BIRTHDAY (woven bee) / AND VERY MANY MAY YOU SEE, which Godden records as number 474.
not recorded
475
Have mercy upon us (Charity girls)
Godden records this title as having been derived from a Stevens advert. It is believed the actual title is sb1528: O LORD HAVE MERCY UPON US, which Godden records as number 595.
187
499
I had a little doggy
This title has not been recorded on an actual bookmark. It is believed the title should be sb704: FOR A GOOD BOY, which Godden records as number 429.
216
534
Little Samuel
This title has not been recorded on an actual bookmark. The central image however is that of the Joshua Reynolds painting of a little by kneeling in prayer, which has this title. It is believed the Stevens title should be sb820: GENTLE JESUS, MEEK AND MILD, which Godden records as number 516.
294
608
Prayers and IHS repeated
Both Darby and Godden note this design was registered on 30 May 1862. However, based on Godden's book, it would seem that the registration was for two different designs, one being " PRAYER ", and the other " I.H.S with small cross ". The " I.H.S with small cross " title is already recorded on this site as sb1096, whilst the title, " PRAYER ", is also recorded as sb1588, although as yet without an image. It is hence believed the title above is not a genuine title, and is removed.
not recorded
617
Queen Victoria
Godden notes this design was recorded from a Bookseller advert, as being " Portrait of the Queen and the late Prince Consort ". Godden also suggests this advert might relate to the large Souvenir silk, su16: THE QUEEN AND HER SONS.
not recorded
626
Remember me / When this you see
This bookmark has not been recorded with an image, and as it is exactly the same title as the Welch & Lenton bookmark, owe570, it is believed this Stevens entry is in error, and has been removed.
312
642
Sancta Maria (narrow band)
Both Darby and Godden identify the source of this title as being a Stevens advert, and as it has not been recorded as an image, consequently, it has been removed. The only concern though is that many of these narrow bands formed part of a collection of Bible Bookmarks, and it is hence possible this title really does exist, to be re-added later.
not recorded
674
The belief
Godden similarly identified the source of this title as being a Stevens advert. It has however to date not been recorded as an image. If it is another Stevens descriptive title, it would likely have an actual title of sb1016: I BELIEVE IN GOD THE FATHER, which Godden records as number 496.
113
682
The crucifixion
As noted above, Stevens recorded this title in his adverts, and in the court case against Mulloney & Johnson. Although the title itself does not exist, the actual bookmark to which this advert refers is sb2104: THE REDEEMER.
195
692
The late John Angell James
Both Darby and Godden reference this title back to Stevens adverts, and to date, no image of this bookmark has been recorded. It might be that if Stevens issued this bookmark after James death, he would naturally refer to his being " The Late ". It is therefore believed the proper title for this bookmark is sb1144: JOHN ANGELL JAMES / THE PATH OF THE JUST IS AS THE SHINING, which Godden records as number 518, and Darby as number 194.
278a
710
The Old arm chair (chair at top)
There is recorded a version of " THE OLD ARM CHAIR " with the chair being at the top of the bookmark, although that version is recorded differently as it has a musical score. There is no record of this title, and it has been removed.
331
727
The Star Spangled Banner
It is not known from where both Darby and Godden derived this title, although it is highly typical of the bookmarks made in Patterson, New Jersey, America. Whilst Darby records a size for this bookmark, thus suggesting he had seen it, for this site's Catalogue it is considered an invalid title, and has been removed.
339
736
To a brother
Both Darby and Godden reference this title back to Stevens adverts. To date, no image of this bookmark has been recorded, and as the title is too generic to be identified with anything else, it has been removed.
