by Godden:
Ludwig Windthorst was born in Germany on 17 January 1812. He was one of the founders of the Central Party - probably being responsible for the dismissal of Bismark - and was the most noteworthy German Roman Catholic political leader. He died in Berlin on 14 March 1891.

This subject is not listed on known Stevens labels, although unmounted silks have been recorded. This and other foreign portrait silks were probably made only for export.

Other comments:
I believe the German woven on the silk translates as:
" FOR TRUTH FREEDOM AND RIGHT "

The silk portrait does not have a weavers name, and there is no conclusive evidence to say it was woven by Stevens. The card mount however is the same, as respects border pattern, thickness and quality, as most of the other German portrait silks recorded on this site.
