by Godden:
The Princess of Wales, who became Queen Alexandra, was born on 1 December 1844, the daughter of King Christian IX of Denmark.
On 10 March 1863 the Princess was married to the Duke of Cornwall (the future King Edward VII).
King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra succeeded to the British throne on the death of Queen Victoria in 1901.

Two different versions of this subject are found:

One showing Princess Alexandra nearly full-face and wearing a three-row string of pearls (see so544). The mauve dress has often faded badly and appears white.

The other shows the Princess's head half turned to the right, the half-length portrait posed above two crossed flags (the image above).

The title was first listed on label 22+17+2 - an example of which, in my own (i.e Godden's) collection, is dated August 1887 - and specimens are affixed to type D card-mounts.
The title was first included in a Stevens advertisement published in May 1887.
From 1901, the Princess of Wales was, of course, Queen Alexandra (see so20).
