I have been unable to trace very much information on the champion cyclist Richard Howell.

Although the Stevens card-mounts proclaim him as 'Champion of the World', his fame does not appear to have been long lasting.
He apparently stood over six feet tall, and was at his best when riding the old-type non-safety bicycles.

His portrait is woven above a scene of a bicycle race, and three machines are depicted above the portrait.

This very rare portrait silk was first listed on label 23+26+2 of 1887 and the title was discontinued after label 31+31 of 1895. Examples are found on C2 card-mounts.
The subject was included in a Stevens advertisement published in July 1887.
