Nicholas II succeeded his father, Alexander III of Russia, in November 1894.
In January 1895 he married Princess Alix of Hesse, who changed her name to Alexandra.
The reign was an unfortunate one, including both the Russo-Japanese War and the internal unrest which culminated in the Russian Revolution and the death of Nicholas II and his family on 17 July 1918.

This extremely rare silk is shown above in its unmounted state, and is a pair to CZARINA OF RUSSIA (Empress Alexandra).

The wording below the portraits being a formal blessing on the lines of 'May God preserve Guard and Keep' with the date '1896'.

These portraits were first listed on label 31+29a under the joint name CZAR & CZARINA OF RUSSIA.
