The original CRYSTAL PALACE was built in Hyde Park, London to house the Great Exhibition of 1851. After the Exhibition closed, the Palace was moved and re-built at Sydenham, South London, although the new one had significant design differences to the original. This new CRYSTAL PALACE was completed in 1854, and eventually destroyed by fire in 1936.
On the bookmark above, it is noted that Queen Victoria opened this new CRYSTAL PALACE on 10th May, 1854, whilst it is believed she actually opened it on 10th June. It is interesting too that the stiff backing paper to which this bookmark is attached is dated by Godden to the 1880 - 85 period, demonstrating perhaps that even after 30 years, the Palace was still a popular place to visit.
