has been commissioned to celebrate 50 years of progress by
GLASS (COVENTRY) LIMITED
 
 
1929
-
19th June: Company incorporated and trading began from premises
in BAYLEY LANE, COVENTRY. Formed by Tom Whiteman from
the glass section of the family business, Whiteman and Son Ltd.,
Plumbers, Painters and Glass Merchants. Initial payroll - 7.
 
 
1935
-
Business transferred to larger premises in Raglan Street, Coventry.
A number of nearby satellite works added 1950-1965.
 
 
1970
-
Business transferred to larger purpose-built factory at Herald Way,
Binley, Coventry.
 
 
1973
-
Binley works extended.
 
 
1977
-
The most up-to-date equipment installed to produce Silver Glass
in quantity. The company is one of the largest Mirror Manufact-
urers in the country.
 
 
1979
-
50 years on: an additional new factory will be completed this year
on an adjoining site at Binley. Payroll now in excess of 300.
 
 
During this period the Company has carried out a larger number of major
glazing contracts, not only in Coventry, but throughout the country. In
recent years a substantial export trade has been developed, mainly in Europe.

 
Tom Whiteman, founder of the Company, was Lord Mayor of Coventry
1964/65 and an Alderman of the City.

 
The Company is now the Headquarters of the Midland Division of Doulton
Glass Industries Limited with subsidiary companies in Doncaster, Stoke,
Birmingham, Northampton and Bournmouth as well as Coventry.
