The White

Tower

1078 - 1978

The White Tower was built
in 1078 by William the
Conqueror, constructed of
limestone from Caen in
Normandy. The name "White
Tower" came from the fact
that it was whitewashed by
Henry III in 1241. Ravens
have inhabited the Tower
of London probably from
the time it was built. They
are now cared for by the
Raven Master and fed raw
meat daily. Legend has it
that if the ravens leave, the
White Tower will fall, and
disaster will strike England.
