This was one of the four earliest silk portraits, issued in 1885. It is small, in black and white silks. At first, it was sold at 6d; but by 1887 the price had been reduced to 3d.

A brief outline of this politician's career is given on so184, where the Stevens examples are discussed; but the Grant back-label found with this portrait silk also gives a review of Joseph Chamberlain's career. The words 'Champion of Freedom' are sometimes printed on the card mount, above the portrait.
